Atrial Septostomy

Atrial septostomy is a surgical procedure that creates a small hole between the two upper chambers of the heart (the atria). In this procedure, a surgeon will create the hole using a catheter with a balloon on the end. The balloon is inflated and pulled into the right atrium, creating a small hole between the two chambers. The balloon and catheter are then removed from the body.
